What is a Nikon NEF file?

NEF ("Nikon Electronic Format") is Nikon's RAW format, used by both the Z-series mirrorless cameras and the long line of D-series DSLRs. It holds the full sensor readout along with Nikon's Picture Control and white-balance metadata. Nikon offers NEF in several flavors — uncompressed, lossless-compressed, and the newer High Efficiency (HE / HE★) options on Z8 and Z9 that shrink files while keeping most of the quality. None of them is a finished image, so a NEF needs developing before you can use it.

RAWSnap decodes NEF locally in your browser and gives you a neutral, natural-color starting point to adjust and export as JPG.
