What is a DNG file?

DNG ("Digital Negative") is Adobe's open, publicly documented RAW format. Unlike brand-specific formats, DNG was designed as a universal container, so it shows up in a lot of places: Leica and Ricoh cameras write it natively, most drones (DJI and others) save DNG, phone RAW is often DNG, and Lightroom can convert any RAW into DNG for archiving. It's still raw sensor data, so it needs developing into JPG before it's shareable.

Tips for DNG files

• Drone DNGs love Dehaze. Aerial shots often sit behind atmospheric haze — a little Dehaze and Clarity brings back contrast and detail.
• Leica and Ricoh files are clean — start from Natural and make only small moves to keep their signature look.
• Phone DNGs (ProRAW / Android) are also DNG; if a phone file only shows an embedded preview, that's expected — see the Apple ProRAW and Samsung Expert RAW pages.
