What is an ORF file?

ORF ("Olympus Raw Format") is the RAW format used by Olympus and its successor brand OM System, across their Micro Four Thirds cameras. The Micro Four Thirds sensor is smaller than APS-C or full-frame, which keeps the bodies and lenses compact — a favorite for travel and wildlife — but it also means shadow detail and high-ISO noise need a slightly gentler hand in editing. An ORF is raw sensor data, so it has to be developed into JPG before sharing.

• Olympus colors are lively — the Natural preset is usually plenty; save Vivid for overcast days.
