What is a Pentax PEF file?

PEF ("Pentax Electronic Format") is the native RAW format for Pentax K-series DSLRs. Pentax is unusual in giving you a choice at capture time: you can save RAW as PEF or as the universal DNG. If your files are PEF, RAWSnap decodes them directly; if you shot DNG, our DNG to JPG page covers that too. Either way it's raw sensor data that needs developing into JPG before sharing.

Which cameras create PEF files?

Pentax K-mount DSLRs, including the full-frame K-1 and K-1 II, and APS-C bodies such as the K-3 III, KP, K-70 and K-S2. Pentax's weather-sealed bodies are popular with landscape and outdoor photographers, so PEF files often come from demanding light.
