What is a Sony ARW file?

ARW ("Alpha RAW") is Sony's RAW photo format, used across the Alpha mirrorless line, the ZV vlogging cameras and the RX compacts. Like any RAW file it stores the unprocessed data from the sensor rather than a finished picture, which is why an ARW won't open in most photo viewers, upload to social media, or attach to a message. It has to be developed into a standard format like JPG first.

Sony has revised the format over the years — modern Alpha bodies write compressed and lossless-compressed ARW variants, and high-resolution bodies like the a7R series produce especially large files. RAWSnap decodes all of these locally and renders a natural-color preview you can adjust before saving.
