What is a Canon CR3 file?

CR3 is Canon's current RAW format, introduced with the EOS M50 and now standard across the EOS R mirrorless system. It replaced the older CR2 format and uses a more modern container with better compression, including Canon's C-RAW (compressed RAW) option that produces noticeably smaller files. Because it's still raw sensor data, a CR3 isn't a viewable photo yet — it needs to be developed into JPG before you can share or print it.

CR3 vs CR2: which do you have?

If your camera is an EOS R-series or a recent EOS body, your files are almost certainly CR3. Older EOS DSLRs (like the 5D Mark III/IV, 6D, 80D and Rebel line) produce CR2. RAWSnap converts both — if you have older files, use our Canon CR2 to JPG page.

Tips for Canon files

• Canon's color is famously flattering for skin — the Portrait or Natural preset usually needs very little extra work.
• C-RAW files are smaller but develop the same way; you won't need different settings.
• Lift shadows gently. Canon files take shadow recovery well, but pushing too far on older bodies can reveal noise — raise Shadows in moderation.
